Cannabis light stress: compare light burn, bleaching, heat, and look-alikes before reacting
Cannabis light stress is easy to overcall from one pale, curled, or dry-looking leaf near the top of a canopy. Light intensity, local heat, airflow, water status, nutrient or pH problems, pests, and normal tissue differences can overlap. This flow does not diagnose from a photo. It helps you compare the timing and distribution, identify missing evidence, and record a stable baseline before making a measured, reversible change.

First, preserve the evidence and address immediate safety
If there is an electrical, fire, unsafe-heat, contamination, or severe plant-health concern, address that directly through appropriate local expertise. Otherwise, do not move the fixture, change the timer, alter feed strength, change watering frequency, and redesign airflow all at once. Photograph affected and unaffected growth, record when the pattern started, and list every recent change before the evidence disappears.
Compare possible excess light with visible bleaching
A possible excess-light pattern is strongest when the affected tissue sits in the most exposed canopy area and the timing follows a documented increase in output, lower hanging height, longer schedule, or rapid canopy rise. Bleaching describes pigment loss at exposed tissue, but color alone does not prove the cause. Compare the light map, affected and shaded positions, new and older growth, fixture change time, and PPFD method before treating either label as a diagnosis.
Compare local heat with root-zone and nutrition look-alikes
Heat evidence includes a local temperature or airflow event, a humidity shift, and symptoms that line up with that event; a room sensor far below the canopy may miss the hot pocket. Root-zone, watering, nutrient, or pH problems are more plausible when the timing follows irrigation or feeding and the distribution does not match the high-light area. The causes can coexist, so keep measured temperature and humidity, VPD, watering, feed, runoff, and pest observations beside the photos.
Use a 24-hour and three-day observation sequence
Right now, save the photo pair, canopy position, fixture setting and distance, PPFD source, schedule, stage, temperature and humidity source, and recent water or feed events. During the next light period, repeat the same views and note local heat or airflow you can verify. Over the next few days, compare progression on old tissue with new growth. Damaged tissue may not recover, so the useful signal is whether the pattern stops advancing and new growth remains stable.
What not to do while the cause is uncertain
Do not diagnose from canopy position or color alone, increase light to fix a weak plant, chase a single PPFD or VPD number, or combine a lighting adjustment with aggressive irrigation or nutrient changes. Choose the smallest reversible response supported by the record, write down what stayed unchanged, and let the next observation window show whether the evidence moved in the expected direction.
